The great crossing
Anyone who has seen the television series “Het rampjaar 1672” will have noticed in episode 6 how the French crossed the ice of the Waterlinie near Woerden with their troops. With soldiers, carts and horses, they ventured across to plunder the villages of Zwammerdam and Bodegraven on the other side of the line. Then they retreated back towards Woerden. This artwork is a depiction of the march made by the French troops in the last days of 1672. The map portays part of the water line with the villages of Bodegraven and Zwammerdam on the left and the town of Woerden on the right.
The artwork can be seen during the exhibition ‘Headquarters imagined‘ along with other artworks inspired by the disaster year. You can see the exhibition until the end of December at the Groene Harthuys, Bouwsteeg 6 in Bodegraven, open on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
